About the Gypsy Cob
One of the first things that attract people to this magical breed is their wow factor; the abundance of hair and feather along with, of cause, the beautiful markings all in one perfectly sized package.
They are a calm, dependable breed that is a joy to own and work with. Renowned for their wonderful presence and kind-hearted disposition, combined with their romantic, fairy tale appearance, they are the embodiment of many peoples childhood dream horse.
The Gypsy Cob is a heavy set, small, athletic draught with abundant bone, hair and feather. Their country of origin is the United Kingdom, where they were developed by the Romany (or Gypsy) people from breeds including the Shire, Fells and Dales ponies, along with other Native Pony breeds that ran wild in the UK. A quality cob should resemble a scaled down version of a pedigree English Shire with more feather and bone, and a neater, smaller Native Pony type head. They come in a large variety of colours.
Today the Gypsy cob is seen in almost every discipline. Because of their kind, willing disposition, they make exceptional horses for people of all ages and levels of experience. They are known to excel at gymkhana’s, pony clubs, adult riding clubs and as wonderful child’s mounts. They are obviously at home in harness and love to get out and see new things, which makes them exceptional and dependable driving horses and trail riding partners. They are known to do exceptionally well in Show Jumping for such a stout, heavily set, little horse and are also making a name for themselves at Dressage events. They can now also be seen competing in some western pleasure disciplines in America.
They are fast becoming one of the most popular breeds of horse in Australia, never failing to attract crowds where ever they go, even on private outings owners of this breed are always approached by admirers, many of whom know nothing about horses.
